The Futsal Insights conference will have the presence of Manchester Thunder from the Vitality Netball Superleague to present their successful Performance Pathway Programme that is already delivering spectacular results despite only launching in 2017.
The programme, which covers the ages of 11 until 21 years old, recently had 7 players named in the England squad of 14 for the upcoming Netball Europe U17 Championships and their U21s are champions after an unbeaten season. The programme’s stated objective is to “to find, inspire and develop the next generation of leading netballers for Thunder, the North West and England.”
Manchester Thunder are one of England’s leading netball clubs having won the championship on two occasions. English netball is on the rise with the domestic league having sell-out crowds and being shown on Sky Sports, rapid growth in participation and the national team recently winning Team of the Year and Greatest Sporting Moment at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.
The club will be represented by Pathway Head Coach and former England international Laura Malcolm. Laura has been involved in coaching almost since her first introduction to the game and has set up her own business, Maias Netball, to create more opportunities for netball players and provide lots of free content online.
Laura’s situation, combing her coaching role with that as a current member of the Superleague side, highlights the similarities in netball and futsal in England where top players are not able to support careers as full-time athletes. Therefore, implementing a developmental performance programme like Thunder’s can be a realistic ambition for futsal clubs.
Laura said of the performance programme “This season Manchester Thunder aim to create a solid and transparent pathway that produces a conveyor belt of quality players from year 7 up. We are a competitive franchise but we always endeavour to develop our programmes along with every player and every coach.”
Futsal Insights co-founder Doug Reed added "We are delighted that Laura will present Manchester Thunder's successful youth programme. It will provide attendees with relevant and practical insight on how to create and implement a youth programme that can effectively produce high-level athletes able to play at the highest levels including internationally."
